AFRICAN CUISINE RESTAURANTS IN ST.-PETERSBURG

Congo Cafe

Zhukovskova

5 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Currently, my favorite place in St. Petersburg.  Good atmosphere, good prices, and I've yet to have to have anything close to a bad meal.  In fact, most have been down right tasty.  I don't think I'm the only one on to this place though as it seems to be getting more and more crowded.  The downside is that the service seems to be getting progressively worse.
Magrib 84 Nevsky Prospect   Excellent food, great location, fair prices, good (but declining) service  and great atmosphere.  What's not to like?  One annoying factor is when the Club Manager makes his way through the restaurant and reaches over you, almost spilling your drink to hand free passes to your date, as if to say "if you can ditch the guy you are with, we'd love to have you come to our nightclub"  Welcome to trendy places in Russia.  Try the almond cake for dessert.

 under renovation
Propaganda 40 Nabereznaya Reki Fontanki   I've eaten here twice and both times the outside of my meat was burned and the inside was frozen.  No wonder the place is always empty.  Great location though on Fontanka just a few doors north of Nevsky.

EUROPIAN CUISINE RESTAURANTS IN ST.-PETERSBURG

Aquarel Birzhevoy Bridge   A floating (sort of) two floor restaurant.  The first floor is a fancy type restaurant while the second floor is more a bar & grill.  I've never eaten on the first floor but the bar restaurant upstairs is highly recommended.  Very fashionable, great atmosphere, and a spectacular panoramic view of the Neva River right across from the Winter Palace (Hermitage).  They bill themselves as a fusion restaurant which to me means they have no idea what they are serving but are looking for an excuse to add 10 - 20% to the prices.  One odd thing..  For the life of me, I can't figure out what their advertising line on their cards is supposed to mean - "Aquarel - the only restaurant."
Bistro Garcon 95 Nevsky Prospect   Very high quality food and excellent service.  Quite the charming date place.  Unfortunately, for some reason, "French" = "Expensive"  :-(

Camelot

Nevsky pr., 22-24

12 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Location, Location, Location!  interesting atmosphere, not the tastiest of food, though I haven't been there for a while.

Cafe Che 3 Poltavskaya Ulitsa   Just off Old Nevsky in a bit of a rough neighborhood, an extremely trendy desert and coffee place that doubles as a bar with some live entertainment.  Excellent Cheese cake.  Now the bad... I used to recommend this place to everybody that would listen to me.  Then they had the audacity to tell me that on weekends, I couldn't be served without a membership card, but that I was welcome back the rest of the week.  Since what I think of this place now may offend some, I'll just say that I politely recommend that everybody boycott this place.  (p.s.  I realize that I can get a club card by speaking to a Manager for a minute, but the policy still offends me and would not make up for the indignity of an 18 year old waitress telling me after I already ordered that she couldn't serve me a cup of tea and piece of cake.  If the manager reads this, he can take his card and go  ***censored by Oksana**** himself!!!!.)

If your company’s paying for it, why not eat there? For your money, any of 100 restuarants will give you equally good food for 1/10th the price.

Federico Fellini

M.Konyushennaya ul., 4/2

Closed - now a sushi restaurant.  But the sushi restaurant gets good reviews for romantic atmosphere seekers.

Really tasty German food and perhaps even better food. Nice location on Canal Griboyedova close to Nevsky. Interesting musical entertainment. Well, interesting can have many different meanings.

The Old Custom House

Tamozhenny per., 1

Are you trying to impress somebody? This French/Russian combo will set your wallet back but it’s one of the finer restaurants in the city and very classy.

GEORGIAN CUISINE RESTAURANTS IN ST.-PETERSBURG

Kavkaz-Bar

Karavannaya ul., 1118

Nice area, nice atmosphere, decent service. I woldn’t make much of an effort to go there, but if I’m in the neighborhood and hungry, I stop in. The Shashlyk (Russian barbacue) is excellent.

INDIAN CUISINE RESTAURANTS IN ST.-PETERSBURG

Tandoor

Voznesenskiy pr., 2

12 p.m. to 11 p.m.

I've yet to make it, but friends say good things.
Swagat     Oksana recently went through an Indian food craving period, so I feel qualified to say this place serves some very tasty authentic Indian food.  The spices definately carry a kick (and a punch).  A bit of a taxi ride from the Center, my guess is that despite my positive experiences and good reviews elsewhere, it won't be open long since it tends to be empty often.

ITALIAN CUISINE RESTAURANTS IN ST.-PETERSBURG

Da Vinchi

M.Morskaya ul., 15

12 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Seems to follow the trend of marketing itself as a certain cuisine and decorating the restaurant accordingly, and then serving typically Russian cuisine such as shashlyk.  Unless maybe shashlyk has become popular in Italy unbeknownst to me.  I did like the Terra missou (sp?)

La Strada

B.Konyushennaya ul., 27

12 p.m. to 11 p.m.

I found it pricey for what they offer and the atmosphere it's served in.

Mama Roma

Karavannnaya ul., 3/ Moskovskiy pr., 192

9 a.m. to 2 a.m.

Dare I say, “the best” pizza in St. Petersburg. Admittedly, that’s a little bit like being the National Ski champion of Jamaica, but give credit where deserved.

Patio Pizza

Nevsy pr., 30

12 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Good location, easy to find, and a very “safe” choice. Very western menu and decent service. It has a chain restaurant feel to it, maybe because it’s :::gasp:::: part of a chain.

JAPANESE CUISINE RESTAURANTS IN ST.-PETERSBURG

Kyoto

Nab. reki Fontanki, 77

13.00 a.m. to 24.00 p.m.

Yakatoria

Ostrovksaya Ploshad

10:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Great location around the corner from Gostiny Dvor.  Quite the stylish crowd and some pretty impressive cars outside would make you think the prices would be ridiculous, but surprise- extremely reasonable for Sushi.  Highly recommended!
Planet Sushi 94 Nevsky Prospect   Corner of Nevsky and Mayakovskaya.  Japanese restaurants became all the rage the last few years and too many restaurants to count opened.  Planet Sushi, because of it's location became a leading player, though for my money, I'll take Yakatoria any day of the week for sushi. (and frequently do).  Planet Sushi is part of Rossinter, the huge Moscow restaurant company.

MEXICAN CUISINE RESTAURANTS IN ST.-PETERSBURG

La Cucaracha

Reki Fontanki nab., 39

12 p.m. to 1 a.m.

If you like melted velvita cheese on soggy nachos or ketchup with a dash of pepper modeling as salsa, then by all means go. If you are looking for decent food, stay the hell away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Senior Pepe's Cantina

Lomonosova ul., 3

12 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Not the easiest place to find, even though it’s very close to Nevsky and the largest shoping center in the city, but the food is genuinely tasty (Oksana hated the Chimichunga though :-( ) Be very careful about taking the chef’s offer of making the food “authentically Mexican and spicey.” My native Los Angeles roommate nearly dove into the fountain after one bite after making this near fatal mistake. On a side note… the coat check babushka is the nicest in town.

Sadly - now closed.  I wonder what happened to the Babushka.

Tequilla Boom     Out of limited choices, probably the best option if you want somebody you are with to experience Mexican food.  Certainly nothing outstanding, but passable quality.  Nice atmospshere.

ORIENTAL CUISINE RESTAURANTS IN ST.-PETERSBURG

Kalif

Millionnnaya ul., 21

12 p.m. 12 a.m.

Here's one  I’ll genuinely recommend. Very tasty Uzbeki food, really fun atmosphere and a few belly dancers to boot. The service is good, but double check the bill when it comes.  A bit touristy, but considering it's a few doors from the Hermitage, what would you expect?  Used to be called 1001 Arabian Nights.

If money is no object and you want to experience the essence of New Russian dining, you've found the perfect spot.  Please re-read the part about money not being a consideration if you are thinking of going there.

Dostoevsky Art-Bar

Vladimirskiy pr., 15

1 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Heavily advertised clearly targeting tourists.  Rather famous as having one of the few vegetarian menus in St. Petersburg.  Pleasant atmosphere.
Orient Express 21 Marata Ulitsa   Just a few doors down from Metro Mayakovskaya.  My one experience here was positive, though I can't really remember the food.  Good date atmosphere.

SPANISH CUISINE RESTAURANTS IN ST.-PETERSBURG

El Toro 1/71 Marata Ulitsa 12 p.m. to last guest Conveniently located right next to Metro Mayakovskaya.  I'm not a good person to review this restaurant.  3 years ago, I ate here with a friend and he got horrible food poisoning and had to have his stomach pumped and spend 2 days in the hospital.  I haven't been able to walk by the place since without a queasy feeling.

Picasso

P.S. Bolshoy pr., 3

12 p.m. to 5.30 p.m.

Torres Bar

Nevsky pr., 53

12 p.m. o 5 a.m.

Spanish themed restaurant earns my approval with consistently decent food with fair prices and decent service. Convenient location on Nevsky right next to Nevsky Palace also a plus.  Atmosphere leaves a little to be desired.  Definately decorated and furnished on the cheap, unless eating on picnic tables is trendy.

UKRAINIAN CUISINE RESTAURANTS IN ST.-PETERSBURG

Shinok

Zagorodny pr., 13

24 hours non-stop

My friend swears by this Ukrainian restaurant, while I found it very tasty but just a bit pricey for it’s cuisine. I wouldn’t stay away because of the prices though. The food is good, and it has the usual Ukrainian restaurant over the top decorations, but one problem: The entertainers that come through the restaurant singing every 15 minutes are down right annoying.

BEER

Bierstube

Nevsky pr., 57 (Nevsky palace Hotel)

5 p.m. to12 a.m.

Liverpool

Mayakovskogo ul., 16

11 p.m. to 2 a.m., 11 p.m. to5 a.m. FR-SU

Another Russian restaurant that put more effort into its theme than its product.  This one is an ode to the Beatles.  One nice thing about this restaraunt is that all the dishes are pictured on the menu which makes the Russian translations a little easier.  Nice atmostphere, cozy place, though the booths are a little too cozy to acutally sit without rubbing knees ith the person across from you.

Molli's Irish Bar

Rubinshteyna ul., 36

12 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Thumbs up in every category. Everything I’ve ever ordered there has been tasty, and as you might expect from an Irish Pub, the beer is cold. Fun lively place.

Tinkoff

Kazanskaya ul., 7

2 p.m. till to the last Guestleaves it

Tribunal Bar

Dekabristov pl., 1

12 p.m. to 6 a.m.

I'd be really shocked if somebody went here for the purposes of dinner, but if you at the bar and find yourself hungry, the food is OK.  Pricy for what you get, but convenient I guess.

SEAFOOD

Christopher

B. Morskaya ul., 27

12 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Very nice atmosphere and nice location.  Food wasn't good or bad enough to leave a lasting memory.  Service was quite good.

Matrosskaya Tishina

Marata ul., 54/34

24-hours non-stop

I've eaten here twice and have had night and day experiences.  First time, it was quite impressive with some very tasty food.  Second time, nothing seemed very appealing and our whole group was left shaking their heads.
